Getting PMail to read old data when installed in a new computer.
Pmail User Doc
Hi, folks! I've been using Eudora forever and found the 1.0 Open Source Edition quite a while ago. It seems no one is working on it these days and while it works ok, it has issues that are not being addressed.
I tried Pmail YEARS ago, but found it too complex for my needs; now that it's more 'mature' I'm going to try it again.
My download selection was 4.74 for Windows thru Vista with the disclaimer that it should run on W7. My downloaded installer is named 'w32-470.exe', however. Is this correct?
Also the latest manual is for 4.41 - any significant differences?

After installing 4.7 no messages displayed. (pmail in wine)
I had 4.63 installed, but couldn't get message from f.e. a gmail account which uses SSL. I didn't find a way to do this and finally gave up on that.
I continued with those mail accounts which didn't need SSL.
This morning I stumbled upon a thread in which was reference of pmail 4.7. I looked at the detail description and to my pleasure I saw that one of the big changes was to use open SSL. As my linux has open SSL, I downloaded 4.7 and upgraded the 4.63.
When I started my main account I got my usual 3-pane window, but the contents of the messages wasn't displayed. The folders were displayed as well as the message tittles, but not the body in the pane below.
I closed Pmail and started again with the gmail user account I had made before.
The same thing was there, no message body displayed. I went into options and un-ticked: display the fancy version if exist. Then I got sometimes some more text in the body.
Before I had made a test message to be sent with SSL and I went to it and did resend this message. I verified and it was received at the destination, so indeed open SSL did work.
Then I wanted to display a picture in an attachment and got the message that wine-gecko had to be installed (wasn't needed in 4.63 before) so I did and I got the picture displayed in wine IE.
So back to my problem of no bodies displayed and I closed pmail.
I started again with the main account and now I got the title bar of the window, the menu bar, the message headers without the window bar, but not the bodies. And there was a lot of disk activity which lasted for at least 10 minutes. Finally disk activity stopped, but no change in the way of displaying. When I pushed on a menu entry all I get is a beep. When I switch to another application and come back, I still have that information in pmail's window so indicating the window didn't repaint. All I can do is kill pmail through the tittle bar of the window. A normal close doesn't work.
So how can I go from here to work with pmail? Install 4.63 again over the 4.7 installation?
Have to say that in 4.63 I had some issue with cache hits and did tests with and without IErendering. I can't rember in which state I worked with 4.63 finally, with or without IErendering.
Thanks for any advice.
How to switch dictionaries
A nice addition to 4.7 is the multilingual spell checking.
Having to write in several languages, and now I got 4.7 working I did make a test.
When I call the spell checking, the dictionary available is the Spanish one and when I want to change with the pull down to switch to another one, I have no choice. Looking in the 4.7 DICTS directory I see however quite some dictionaries there. Maybe I missed a point somewhere, but nor in the help nor through a forum search I found how to do it.
Any ideas?

4.2 to 4.7
Howdy
I am setting up Pegasus 4.7 on a Win 7 Pro 64b machine. I was previously using 4.2. In the posts I have read here about moving emails from an old installation to a new one, the trope "then copy the files into the new installation" or words to that effect is common. What is not clear to me is whether one starts by making folders in the new 4.7 installation and then move the PMM and PMI files individually from the 4.2 folders to the folders you have made ready in 4.7 while Pegasus is closed? Or can you simply move a whole folder, say, "RISKS (FOL04679.PMM)" from 4.2 over to 4.7 and it will create it's own folder in the new installation?. I understand about making sure config files are not included in the folder. Currently my old 4.2 "MAIL" is copied onto several different drives (I'm paranoid about drive failure). So, after all that, do you copy emails from one directory into a new one, or copy a complete directory? Sorry that this is so long, but I love to watch myself type.
NIC Teaming with Pegasus Mail
Hi
We use Mercury/32 V4.74 and Pegasus Mail V4.70. Mercury is installed on a Dell server running Windows Storage Server Standard 2008 (64bit). This server is a file server and hosts 99% of our data. Pegasus Mail is installed on the same server and the account folders are located as subfolders beneath the ..\pmail directory.
The server is a member server in a Windows Active Directory domain. The domain clients access Pegasus Mail via a link to the installation on the server (i.e. Pegasus Mail is not installed on any of the client computers).
The server has been running at near capacity with memory etc so I am doubling the amount of RAM in the system from 6 to 12GB and am also going to team the Broadcom NIC's. At present just one NIC is used. I will be enabling a second NIC and teaming them for smart load balancing use.
Whilst researching this I have read that whilst the receiving and sending of data will benefit from more efficient routing of traffic across the NIC's, some applications may not work as well as when using just one NIC. This is because although the Broadcom Program takes the load off the CPU some applications that are CPU bound may actually suffer performance degradation in a smart load balancing setup.
My question is: has anyone implemented SLB using Broadcom's application on a server where Pegasus Mail is installed and where clients link to the central installation? Did you notice any performance hits - did Pegasus Mail behave poorly, did you see an improvement or did performance remain unchanged?
Any insights etc gratefully received.
Thanks.

pmail *.pm$ files in temp folder
Hello!
Noticed a funny thing - then pmail filters act on imap folders (move emails from new mail folder to a specific subfolder in imap mailbox) the directory c:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Temp\ gets filled fwith *.pm$ files. The temp files are a normal thing but what seems either a programmatic error or issue here is that the temp files are not deleted right after they are not needed anymore. For example when a folder close filter is executed it seems that all the emails inside the folder are expanded as temporary files. However these temp files are not deleted right after the folder close rule execution ends.
Seems that these files are in fact deleted after closing the pmail but all the files persist as long as pmail is open. Maybe the files are deleted also when the mailbox is closed - I have to check that.
EDIT: imap mailbox disconnect does not detele the associated temp files.
Can somebody enlight me - is this a normal behaviour or there is some pmail setting I have to tune to get these temp files to be deleted by pmail on an earlier stage?
Why this is a problem to be concerned?
- it is a performance issue. working with imap folder containing thousends of emails and literally copying each email from imap server to local machine for an operation that does not act upon the contents of these emails is very inefficient and this is noticeable on slower internet connection. The combined number of emails is large and directory traversal of large temp folder at some point might get very slow (this behaviour is its different for different OS-s and filesystems).
- it is a space consumption issue. Nowedays the emails are large and combined space occupied this way is huge. The whole contect of imap folder is also located under mail directory imap cash - so for every MB of folder space on IMAP server twice as much is needed on local machine.
- should pmail crash in the middle - there is no process that would take care of these leftovers. This is a privacy issue.
In my case just 10min of normal use of pmail and the temp folder accumulated about 6500 of fresh *.pm$ files occupying around 650Mb. I actually started to hunt this issue when I had to apply search for "all folders" and I run out of diskspace for this operation.
Should this be a programmatic behaviour and not a misconfiguration then perhaps somebody close to developer could point at the issue related to the logic of processing IMAP folders.
Does Pegasus have stationery, smileys/emoticons, sounds, fonts & other "fun" content?
Hi Everyone!
This is my first time here, so please pardon me if I sound dumb. I'm trying to find an email program that includes "fun" features, like those I listed in the subject line. I've been an IncrediMail user since it first came out, (1999-2000), but since Windows 8.1's upgrade about 2 weeks ago, IncrediMail's been crashing at least 3 times a day.
I'm a home user who doesn't do any life or death stuff on my PC...it's strictly for email, games, browsing, etc & having all the bells & whistles that IncrediMail offers is somewhat important to me. I also want an email program that's easy to use, is secure & has a nice interface.
I found Pegasus in an article about the "Best Email Programs", but there were no screenshots, no details about fun content, or anything else I was hoping to find, so I decided that the best place to find out about Pegasus is to ask its users, so here I am!
Will you please tell me about Pegasus so I know whether to change email programs or not? I'm especially interested in security, & all the fun extras I mentioned & I also want to know anything else that you think I should know.
Thank you for any & all information you provide; I really appreciate your help!
Best Regards,
DogPal :)
Pmail ignoring attachment file type
Mostly, the file type extensions declared in the Options > Incoming Mail > Content Viewers section work. One exception seems to be the .pdf extension, which is always shown as "Type unknown" in the attachment list of an incoming email.
I've double-checked the spelling, the application path+name, etc, etc and there is nothing wrong.
Any ideas why this should be?

I'm not sure if there is an internet connection problem or a Pegasus not working with Win 8.1. Any ideas?

Copy messages when message color is set
I've written a rule that copies messages colored Red to a specific folder. Is there a way to get this rule to fire simply in response to changing the header color? I can get it to work by Tools, Apply general rule set to selection, but it would be much easier if it triggered in response to the color change.
(Among other things this would mean I didn't have to keep track of whether the message had been copied already, to avoid getting multiple copies of messages in the destination folder.)
I'm new to using filtering rules, so perhaps this is easy, but I'd appreciate advice/instruction.
thanks
Pegasus on Verizon SMTP Any ideas on what to do? Anyone here on Verizon using smtp?
I must be 20 years on Pegasus now. Weeding all the time but now 12Gb on a usb drive on the road and an ssd on the office PC. Searches really fast on the SSD OMG.
Trouble configuring the smtp for Verizon. Their tech support more used to Outlook and Mac.
Support took control of my machine and tried everything but got errors like pipe-lining etc.

Error in Distribution lists: address ignored when first character on the line is space
Hi!
I just discovered, quite accidentally, that there is an error in Distribution lists:
An email address is ignored, when the first character on that line is a space!
This is somewhat shocking.
I can add that the next character was " .
I am using: WinPMail version: Version 4.70 (Win32), Feb 27 2014, build ID 546
Hang Time
Even since an aborted attempt to install 4.70 (which I have now done), deleting or moving emails to folders now takes up to 30 seconds. I have reindexed all folders, pruned some very old email, rebooted my computer (Server 2008 and Windows 7). This seems to be happening to my account only and happens no matter which workstation I am on.
Thanks!
Cannot send mail- SMTP error message
I just got a new Windows 8 computer and tried to set up Pegasus Mail. POP3 went well and I can receive mail however, I get an error message for outgoing mail' You do not have an active SMPT definition for sending mail via the internet, so no action was taken|". Any help please?
Thanks.
Cannot write email while downloading
Hello--
I have v.4.7 running on Win. Vista Ultimate. I have recently installed 4.7; I was using the previous version. Now, whenever Pegasus looks for new mail or is in the process of downloading new mail, I cannot compose or open or delete anything. The whole program hangs up; sometimes the Pegasus screen goes Vista white until the keystrokes catch up. This is very annoying when I am in the middle of writing an email, which I do frequently, and then it goes to look for new mail and the cursor stops and I lose my train of thought. Or if I go to delete spam messages, I cannot if at that moment Pegasus decides to look for and download new mail.
Why all of a sudden cannot Pegasus multitask?
Thanks

I can see all the (.pmm and .pmi files) in C:\PMAIL\MAIL but they just wont open.
Please assist.
